Travelling Alone - The Struggle is Real

Image
I recently travelled to Vancouver to meet up with some friends who I used to work with here in Japan. Before the trip, several Japanese people asked me about my travel plans, and seemed horrified when I told them that I would be transiting alone. When booking the trip, I didn’t even give it a second thought. After all, this isn’t my first rodeo. In hindsight, perhaps I should have, as travelling alone can bring some pretty challenging moments. You have to make sure you are on the ball at all times, even after you feel like you have reached your limit. You have no other choice if you want to make it to your final destination. After two flights and a bus trip, a total of almost 16 hours in transit, having not slept for over 24 hours, I arrived at Vancouver ai...

Split in Two 二つに分かれた

I was talking to a friend the other day who pointed out something that I had not taken the time to consider yet. My friend did a one year working holiday in Australia, and had intended to do a second year, but decided to come home to be near her family. When she returned home to Japan and started working, she struggled to adapt to her old surroundings and began planning her escape to Australia. However, before she got the chance to put this plan into action, she met her now husband, and decided to stay for a while to be with him. She told me that she doesn't regret returning to Japan, but she still would have liked to have lived in Australia again. Her story made me realise that I may have made my life slightly more complicated than was necessa...

A Japanese Wedding

Image
On March 21 st I attended my first ever Japanese wedding. I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing. I found a beautiful dress (on sale!) that the shop attendant approved as wedding appropriate; your dress should cover your shoulders, cleavage, be a decent length, and not white. I found a cheap necklace while travelling in Thailand that matched the earrings I wanted to wear. Plus, in an incredibly rare example of forethought, I asked my parents to bring stockings for me when they visited at Christmas time, because there is no way I would be able to find a pair of stockings that fit me here. How organised am I! Or so I thought. The nervousness started to creep in on the Wednesday before the wedding, when I went to the hairdresser for a trim. I told him about the...

When should you wear a mask in Japan?

Image
Last week I had a slight cold so I had to wear a mask to school. I hate wearing a mask! They make your face all sticky with humidity, fog up your glasses, and look hideous on almost everyone, myself included. As if I needed something white on my face to draw attention to how white my skin is. Also, I am pretty sceptical that they are serving their intended purpose of “stopping the spread of viruses.” Every year there is a plague of influenza that doesn’t seem deterred by masks. However, the longer I live in Japan, the more reasons I find to wear one. This is my running list that I am sure will continue to grow as times moves on and I become more and more Japanese. When you want to eat nodo-ame or other candy in class Anything that requires a chewing mot...

Making the Decision to Go Home

So it is that time of year again, when the re-contracting papers show up on my desk and everyone around me slowly sinks into confusion. Should I stay? Should I go? It is funny looking back on the last three times I have had to make this decision, and the various emotions I have been through. You would think that it would get easier as time progresses, but each year has presented me with different reasons and different feelings towards the topic. Should I stay a second year? This was by far the easiest decision. My new best friends that I had made were all staying, my Japanese was improving, and I liked Japan. I always said I would stay two to three years, so I signed almost the minute the paper was on my desk. My family was not surprised.

To the Japanese Learner

Image
I thought I would share some of the expectations about Japanese study that I had before moving to Japan and the crushing realizations that have kept life entertaining. Expectation: It’ll be easy to learn Japanese, I’ll just make Japanese friends. Reality: It is actually really hard to make Japanese friends. Once you reach a certain level of Japanese, it becomes entirely necessary to speak with native speakers on a regular basis to improve any further. If you were an exchange student during university you may have realized that at some point you need to step away from your bubble of foreign friends and make your way on your own to the Japanese side. This often requires a lot of courage, but brings excellent results as Japanese people, although shy, are usually kind and curious about foreign cultures and people, and will welcome you with open arms. Consequently, your Japanese will improve a lot. The reality is that this ease of making friends is generally restricted to the...
